Job Summary

Determines department objectives in accordance with overall strategic plan. Erroneous decisions or failure to adhere to objectives results in additional costs and serious delays in overall schedules.

The Supervisor/Manager of Inpatient Psychiatric Social Services is responsible for directing the social services for the San Francisco General Hospital Psychiatric Inpatient Units. The position reports directly to Associate Chief of Inpatient Psych and in dotted line the Director and Nurse Manager of SFGH Utilization Management

The incumbent will supervise/manage: clinical social workers (CSW I & II) who provide clinical assessment, group treatment services, illness education, counseling and family treatment services to adults admitted to SFGH's acute and non-acute units and CCSF discharge. Incumbent will also manage CSW's responsible for implementing interdisciplinary team developing discharge plans to meet the needs identified by the treatment team and providing liaison with community agencies and programs to ensure continuity of care, and also manages one other CSW who rotates, as needed, between the clinical and discharge functions.

Department Description

San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center (SFGH) is the only Level One Trauma Center and the largest acute inpatient and rehabilitation hospital in the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF). The Department of Psychiatry provides twenty-four hour psychiatric emergency services (PES), assessing 7,200 patients each year. Inpatient Psychiatry treats 1,600 patients for a total of 11,000 days annually.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work and minimum six years related experience including at least five in a manager/lead/supervisor role
  • Completed BBS required training on supervision.
  • The ability to collaborate with other managers, to interpret policy and implement organizational change.
  • The skills to motivate a large, multi-cultural and diverse staff for change.
  • Expertise in and the ability to teach evidenced based counseling skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and conflict-resolution skills for dealing with patients, families, advocates, and other medical personnel, as well as subordinate staff.
  • Knowledge of program development and evaluation.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in clinical social work. Knowledge of case management, utilization review, discharge planning, home care and / or managed care.
  • Demonstrated leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff at all levels, and external agencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • Computer proficiency in all relevant information systems, applications, and analysis tools.
  • Strong skills associated with conducting the most complex assessments, problem-solving and critical-thinking.
  • Broad skills associated with treatment redesign, program development, implementation and delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual English and Spanish and/or English and Asian language.
  • A minimum of two experiences in inpatient psychiatry.
  • Knowledge of and experience accessing mental health and substance abuse in San Francisco.

License/Certification

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Current and valid California Driver's license
