Job Description

This is a full-time, career position. Under the direction of the Life After 90 Program Director, this position serves as a Certied Phlebotomist Tech 2 for the Life After 90 study, under the leadership of Dr. Rachel Whitmer, PhD and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

The Research Phlebotomist will provide adult and geriatric phlebotomy, including individuals with cognitive impairment and dementias. The role includes screening, scheduling, specimen collection, data entry, specimen transport, and performing specimen processing for all study related specimens. The incumbent will conduct venipuncture blood collections in a home, community, and/or research clinic setting most days of the week. The phlebotomist will be required to travel within the Bay Area and Sacramento area to perform venipuncture and collect specimens in home and community-based settings. The phlebotomist will serve as a clinical resource liaison for study staff as well as assist in screening, recruitment, and scheduling for research purposes.

This position requires an extensive amount of handling and processing of multiple types of biological samples in various settings. The incumbent will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, ICH/GCP guidelines, UC Davis Health policy and procedures, study protocols, and standard operating procedures. Under direct supervision of the LA90 Project Director, the LA90 Senior CRC will provide direction of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed as a California Certied Phlebotomist Technician as required by current State of California phlebotomy regulations and guidelines.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license.
  • CITI Training must be completed once hired.
  • UC Davis Lab Training must be completed once hired.
  • Two (2) years phlebotomy experience with human patients and/or participants.
  • Experience processing specimens in a laboratory or conducing other laboratory work that requires attention to detail, labeling, and measurement of materials.
  • Completion of IRB Human Subjects training and HIPAA trainings (must be completed within 30 days of hire).
  • Experience following oce, lab, and/or research protocol(s).
  • Prociency in Microsoft Word and Excel and ability to learn other computer programs.
  • Skills and knowledge to practice safe handling, transport, and processing of biological specimens.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with members of the public in community- or home-based settings.
  • Experience working with older adults and those from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to make various reagents and effectively use a micro-pipettor or other laboratory tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with participants and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in speaking English and Spanish.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Handling and processing of blood and/or other biospecimens.
  • Traveling to and from various locations in the Bay Area

  • Must be able to drive to collection location and transport samples in a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement will be provided) in the Bay Area.
  • Skills and ability to travel to various work locations to attend department or study meetings or participate in special projects, training, etc.
  • Skills and ability to drive up to 1.5 hour each way to participant homes to complete specimen collections.

  • This position is a critical position and subject to a background check and drug screen. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history, identity checks and drug screen.
