Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Clinic Manager, performs a variety of laboratory duties for Pacific Oral Pathology Laboratory (POPL).

Essential Functions
  • Prepare biopsy kits and mail-out to contributors upon request.
  • Receive biopsy mailers (USPS, FedEx) and log specimens with assigned accession numbers; conduct gross examination of biopsy specimens, providing adequate descriptions; place specimens into corresponding cassettes with assigned accession numbers.
  • Ensure proper placement of cassettes into formalin containers for pickup by the histotechnology laboratory.
  • File slides and blocks after cases are signed out; properly dispose unrequired accessioned blocks; store necessary blocks and slides for retention; pull selective cases from slide files and re-file as necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of biopsy bottles, mailing items and other lab supplies; alert the lab coordinator when supplies need replenishing.
  • Provide coverage for laboratory coordinator responsibilities as needed to ensure seamless laboratory operations.
  • Assist with communication regarding biopsy reports and laboratory services, addressing inquiries and concerns as needed to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Clinic Manager or assignee.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Medical and dental terminology.
  • Basic level Excel and Word.

Ability to:
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and work schedules.

Experience:
  • Minimum of one year of lab experience.

Education:
  • BS or AA degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology.

Working Conditions:
  • Position is part-time, 5 hours a day, 5 days per week. The hours are from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm.
  • Must be available to work additional hours to cover for other laboratory staff.
  • Occupational exposure to biohazardous materials may reasonably be anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Basic anatomic pathology laboratory skills.

Experience:
  • Prior experience within an anatomic pathology laboratory setting, preferred.

Ability to:
  • Follow oral or written instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Operate computer systems proficiently, including standard office software and applications.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and external clients through verbal and written channels.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while also collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Effectively organize and prioritize work tasks, demonstrating adaptability to shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, exhibiting tact, discretion, and professionalism in interactions with others.

Other:
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Hiring Range $23.10 - $34.36 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
