The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant or Associate Project Scientist position. Physics is the largest department in the L&S Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. It is ranked as one of the top physics departments in the world, with excellence in research, teaching, and service to the community all highly valued.
The McKinsey group is heavily involved in the TESSERACT experiment, as well as related research and development in quantum sensing. TESSERACT is used to search for light dark matter candidates with crystalline and superfluid helium detectors. Work on TESSERACT and related quantum sensing is underway here at Berkeley in the form of background simulations, calibration source research, superfluid helium physics, calorimetry at cryogenic temperatures, and superconducting electronics.
The successful candidate will conduct research on cryogenic hardware development, photoneutron source development, and data analysis. Measurement of scintillation light in superfluid helium, using gamma-ray and neutron sources. Deployment of photoneutron calibration system.
This involves direct detection of Dark Matter with LUX and LZ experiments. Cryogenics, neutron generation and interactions, detectors based on noble liquids, and data analysis, neutron production and detection, on the physics of dark matter detection with noble liquids and R&D on super-fluid helium for future Dark Matter experiments.
