Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to play a major role in development of novel radiochemical separation and delivery techniques for micro-scale production of targets for high energy density programs. You will also participate in isotope-harvesting efforts to obtain long-lived radioisotopes of importance to national-security missions and fundamental science. You will develop novel radiochemistry approaches to collect, and chemically isolate radionuclides produced at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) to make targets for studies of neutron-induced reactions and decay properties at the National Ignition Facility (NIF).This position is in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

In this role you will

  • Develop delivery systems (injection and vacuum assisted) for adding microliters of radionuclide solutions into ignition capsules for high energy density experiments.
  • Perform radioanalytical sample processing and data analysis to interpret results.
  • Develop experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed to collect and purify radioactive isotopes produced at FRIB.
  • Investigate methods needed to fabricate targets of sufficient purity for high energy density experiments from isotopes produced at FRIB.
  • Work with experimental and theoretical nuclear physicists to field experiments and interpret data to measure cross sections and decay properties.
  • Document research, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results for internal and external audiences.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Nuclear Chemistry, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation and associated software controls.
  • Experience designing, assembling, and running nuclear science experiments based on radiochemical or nuclear chemistry methods.
  • Experience with charged-particle and gamma-ray detectors and radiation counting and their associated data analyses.
  • Ability to safely work with radioactive materials (> 100 microCurie)
  • Ability to develop experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed to collect and isolate radioactive isotopes produced at accelerator facilities.
  • Experience with radionuclide separation methods, such as solvent extraction and ion exchange.
