What You Will Do:

Gannett Fleming's Geotechnical, Dams & Hydraulics specialists have the in-depth knowledge to excel on the most challenging geotechnical assignments. We provide innovative solutions for dams, foundations, underground construction, earth structures, levees, water resources projects, ports & harbors, and marginal building sites. Our geotechnical engineers and geologists specialize in earthen dam stability and seepage, landslides, earth retention structures, geotechnical earthquake engineering, seismic hazards, earthquake ground motion development, and building and bridge structure foundations. We have completed thousands of geotechnical and geophysical investigations across the U.S. - from small-scale projects to large, complex dams, highways, bridges, piers, wharves, and underground structures.

We are currently looking for Staff Geotechnical Engineers to support critical infrastructure design and construction throughout California. Our projects include transportation facilities (structures, roadways, rail, airports, ports, and harbors), water conveyance structures (levees, canals, flumes, pipelines), dams, bridges, stream restoration, and many others to help solve California's critical geotechnical challenges. This is an opportunity to work directly with civil and structural engineers and geologists to implement creative geotechnical solutions through all phases of a project's lifecycle.

This is a hybrid position and you must be able to commute to either our Roseville, CA or Oakland, CA office as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Determines client requirements and develops suitable scopes of work, schedules, and budgets to help accomplish our client's objectives
  • Develops and manages subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs and may participate in field exploration activities
  • Performs routine and complex data analysis and engineering calculations, such as slope stability, seepage, liquefaction potential, foundation support, and lateral earth pressures
  • Prepares technical memorandums, letters, and reports
  • Designs, installs, and maintains geotechnical instrumentation systems
  • Works with client and other disciplines to prepare appropriate designs, as dictated by the scope of work
  • Reviews contractor drawings, evaluates need for design changes, and makes appropriate geotechnical recommendations
  • Consults with construction personnel concerning field conditions, sequencing, and scheduling of activities
  • Ensures that production of reports, drawings, and specifications meets the scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements and satisfies federal, state, and local requirements
  • May provide direction to and supervision for junior level staff
  • Communicates independently with clients
  • Able to work in multi-disciplinary teams while leading tasks and project teams
  • This position requires up to 30% travel to other Gannett Fleming offices, client offices, or project work sites and may include overnight travel
Education | Experience:

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering
  • M.S. Degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License required
  • 5-10 years of direct work experience in geotechnical engineering
  • Specialized experience in advanced geotechnical software applications (e.g., APILE, LPILE, SHAFT, GeoStudio, Slope/W, CLIQ, SETTLE3, gINT, and numerical calculations using spreadsheets)
  • Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD preferred
  • Knowledge of engineering concepts, theories, and practices as applied to geotechnical engineering, foundation systems, levees, dams, and waterfront structures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Expertise with standard office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Some experience with management of small work groups and project tasks
