Job Summary

The Sign Language Medical Interpreter position duties are to provide concise, objective, and accurate interpretation, translation, and transliteration for patients, their caregivers, family members, providers, and staff who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing throughout UCSF Health in person and by video. Sign Language Medical Interpreter provides a communication link between the d/Deaf or hard of hearing patients and staff by transmitting information by employing consecutive and simultaneous interpreting/transliterating skills. This position will be primarily assigned to assist d/Deaf nurse(s) and other duties are to interpret for other providers, care team members as well and ASL patients. Employs American Sign Language (ASL) and various communication modes, such as fingerspelling and Conceptually Accurate Signed English. May provide explanatory or additional interpretation on request.
Under the direction and operational oversight of the departmental management team assists with shadowing and orienting new Sign Language medical interpreters/translators and participates in staff, provider, and patient educational opportunities. Functions as a member of the health care team and demonstrates the ability to consistently interpret complex and difficult communications in all patient, caregiver, and provider interactions in a medical setting.

*Sign-on Bonus eligibility:

  • Candidate cannot be a current UC employee.
  • The candidate cannot have been employed by the University during the 12 months before the proposed rehire date.
  • Candidate position classification cannot be Senior Management Group (SMG).
  • Candidate must meet any additional UC location eligibility requirements.

**Moving Reimbursement Eligibility:
  • Actual moving expenses may be paid for new appointees to certain nonacademic positions requiring specialized training and/or experience of a technical, professional, or administrative nature.
  • The new appointee must reside outside the commuting distance of the campus to which they have been appointed.
  • Moving expenses may, at campus discretion, be paid by the University when a current employee is required to transfer or accepts a position, including a position at the same grade or a lower grade, at a campus outside a reasonable commuting distance.
  • The move must be closely related to the start of work and meet both the time and distance tests under I.R.C. Section 217(c).2



The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school and 60-semester units or 1200 hours of postsecondary interpreting experience, proficiency in American Sign Language and Signed English; and knowledge of the ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of appropriate roles, ethical standards, and individual responsibilities relating to working with d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their families with the ability to incorporate them into the context of daily work activities.
  • Four (4+) years of experience as a professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter in a medical setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology in source and target language(s); intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of human anatomy and systemic physiology, as validated by achieving a passing score on the prerequisite UCSF-approved competency assessment
  • Knowledge of the various modes of communication and needs of d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to determine patient and workload priorities to enable completion of appointments and projects in a timely manner.
  • Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to exercise sensitivity and patience during interactions with the general public, patients, caregivers, families, and clinical staff in high pressure situations, while maintaining strict adherence to patient confidentiality and awareness of cultural differences
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to function efficiently in a complex, multi-faceted, and fast-paced setting
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of UCSF Health policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Knowledge of and experience in remote interpreting technology
  • Experience working with the community and/or target language population with diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Proven competency in additional languages

License/Certification

  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certificate in interpretation or transliteration and/or NAD Level IV, or Level V certification.
